The first of its kind in Wales, the Gower Project is an ambitious collaboration between farmers, government, wildlife charities and local communities that aims to  vaccinate badgers against Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) and expand the support available to cattle keepers through activities such as enhenced cattle testing, biosecurity etc – Activities completed will depend on available funds.

Our approach

The vaccination of badgers against BTB is a central pillar of our strategy to control the disease in support of farmers and wildlife. We are also working with farmers to enhance bio security measures and enhance the management of chronic breakdown of higher risk herds through improved testing.

Through the collection and validation of available data, the project will produce a working model that can be shared with other communities.

Creating win-win solutions

The culling of badgers to control BTB has proved to be a highly divisive and emotive issue in the UK. However, the Gower Project was founded on the belief that even when groups of stakeholders disagree, common ground can always be found through a willingness to listen and respect each other’s points of view and then work together to find win-win solutions.
